I loved how her world views shifted when she encountered the irreversibility of death and how it made her mature in a progressive way from an unassuming selfish little groupie who had a crush on Conrad to this wise and empathetic girl who vowed to stay by Jeremiah’s side should he ever have a breakdown and to hold Conrad’s hand whenever he needed the additional support.Ĭoming to the boys in question, I always liked Jeremiah more for his sweet candor and his caring demeanour. I enjoyed the boys making fun of Belly, of treating her like she was a little baby, of getting gob-smacked at her changed exterior, and the whole boys versus girls’ scene that unfolded when her best friend came over. The track this story took was predictable, but I enjoyed getting there. I know this all sounds incredibly cliché, but its delivery was such that it made every cliché sound unassumingly original.
But of course, this year she had undergone a major growth spurt and was hoping to catch the eye of the older brother, Conrad who she’d had a crush on since she was twelve.
The boys in question, Conrad and Jeremiah ridiculed and made fun of Belly and treated her like their annoying little sister, and never included her in their plans with her brother Steven, which enraged little Belly to no end. The beach house belonged to her mother’s best friend, Susannah, who was more like a mother to Belly and she would spoil her rotten because she’d always wanted to have a daughter, but was unfortunately stuck with two boys. It makes me mourn the loss of my grandfather, the only person who knew me for me and accepted me as I was with all my faults, which is exactly who Susannah was to Belly.Ĭoming towards the book, it features Belly, a 16-year-old girl, going back to the summer house on Cousins’ Beach, where she went every summer with her mom and brother for two months. This book is so melancholic and sad in its delivery that I almost always cry while reading it, mourning what could’ve been. How it felt like to grow up with two callous boys who were my best friends, my comrades, my fellow adventurers, who later turned into unassuming strangers.
This book reminds me why summer is my favourite season. To me this book is reminiscent of sweet summer days, of walks along the beach, of eating ice cream till I got brain freeze, of play dates with my cousins, of living a life that was straight-up the stuff of my most incandescent dreams. It’s a book I reread almost every summer like clockwork. You know those books in which you don’t really love the main character, but love the vibe and the setting of the story? This post features one of those books for me. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer-they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad.
